Myofunctional Therapy

Myofunctional Therapy

Myofunctional therapy is training or retraining of the lips, tongue, jaws, breathing and swallowing to their proper function. We work with proven exercises and techniques to strengthen the muscles in the correct way. Myofunctional therapy is incorporated into our orthodontic treatment, or is offered as a stand-alone treatment for patients who have problems with tongue-ties, improper swallowing, mouth breathing, and many other issues.

Myofunctional dysfunctions can lead to improper growth patterns, malocclusions or speech problems in growing children if left untreated. We can identify these problems in very young children and can help to retrain or correct these issues, possibly preventing the need for orthodontics in the future. In older children and adults undergoing orthodontic treatment, either with us or another dentist or orthodontist, myofunctional therapy is indicated as an adjunct to allow for more rapid orthodontic treatment and better long-term stability of the results.

A program will be specifically crafted for your or your child’s needs, with supplies, demonstrations, schedules and example videos included. We follow up with you or your child in person or over FaceTime or Skype for your convenience.
